Business communications have changed dramatically over the last 12 to 15 years. In 199, when I’m started work in a regional hospitality company, communication was less complicated. We made use of advanced technologies such as telephone, fax and what then considered as a luxury,  mobile phone. A typical office situation will be where I fax a document to a receiving party, call the person to confirm if he/she receives it and communicate over the phone over the details of document. Communication was more personal and decision making was slower.

By 1996, electronic mail or commonly referred as a e-mail, started its inevitable invasion into offices around the world. This invasion coincides with the proliferation of the Internet. Gradually, e-mail became the norm for business communication.

It is undiniable that with email, the whole paradigm of business communication changed. The world is much more connected, Information flow freely accross what was previously unbrideable boundaries and most importantly, the cost of communication reduced. Despite the obvious advantage, email does come along with certain woes.

The lead time between communication have reduced dramatically, how often you will hear collagues and even business partners expecting instanttaneous replies and answer to their queries almost immediatelly after they have sent the email query out. Recently, this was complicated by the spread of the usage of Short Message Service or SMS. The Increase in the volume of information and the sheer burden of having to make instant decisions ultimately resulted in a increase in executive stress.

Blackberry, a name that is virtually unheard of 7-8 years ago, will change the business communication landscape even more. Executive can now access their email remotely. It’s a boon for mobile executives specifically those who travel for their work. They can now be connected or stay connected in virtually any location accross the global so long as there is network connection.

Similar to email, Blackberry comes with certain woes. Executive stress will increase as the communications become even more instantaneous. Many executives I spoke to had mixed feeling about Blackberry. While there are obvious advantages, many of them were even addicted to their blackberry, constantly checking if they had missed any emails.

The verdict on Blackberry continous to be a hot topic for many. For me, my Blackberry is a brilliant tool for my frequent travel and allows me to keep abreast of my emails but I constantly remain myself not to a slave to it. The debate about if BlackBerry improves office productivity remain unsolved.

Email or BlackBerry, I’m still a great fan of the traditional voice communication. It’s always comforting to know that I’m communicating to someone personally while getting feeback and response.
